Armyworms have ravaged Mohamed Abdel Tawab’s maize crop, the result of increasingly frequent heat waves in this central Egyptian oasis that lies to the west of the Nile.

In recent years, the changing weather patterns have helped give rise to pests that have attacked his tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis and eggplants. Earlier this year, he tried to plant clover, but the weather was too hot and no sprouts appeared.
