April 2023 New Zealand Dairy Export Volume Snapshot

  • Skim milk powder exports rebounded from the prior month to jump 74% above April 2022 levels. Shipments to Algeria climbed by 6,227MT, UP from 0MT the same time last year making the country the second highest in market share with 14%. China remains the top destination with 27% market share as sailings to the country rose by 6,503MT (+126% YoY). Volumes also increased to Southeast Asia with exports to Indonesia (+1,046Mt or +30%), Vietnam (+1,399MT or +85%), and Singapore (+1,795MT or +188%) up versus the prior year.

  • Butter exports recorded the highest monthly volume since December 2022 driven by larger shipments to all of the top 17 destination countries. Saudi Arabia overtook Australia as the second highest in market share as volumes to the country rose by (+1,834MT or +135% YoY) while exports to Australia increased by (+269MT or +13% YoY). China remains the top destination with exports to the country UP 2,393MT (+38% YoY) which was enough to overcome the only substantial loss seen to Egypt (-1,119MT or -88% YoY).

  • Casein exports plummeted to the lowest level since August 2022 due to significant losses to the majority of destinations. The largest decline was seen to Mexico, DOWN 914MT (-78% YoY), followed by the United States (-877MT or 54% YoY). Exports to China, the leader in market share with 33% also fell by 76MT (-7% YoY). Growth was primarily seen to Japan (+121Mt or +72% YoY), Poland (+158MT or +120% YoY), and South Korea (127MT or +122% YoY).
