February 2023 New Zealand Dairy Export Volume Snapshot

  • Skim milk powder exports maintained strength over the prior year, UP 19,911MT (+72%) driven primarily by a boost to China (+11,634MT or +323% YoY). Gains were also supported by Southeast Asia, climbing to 27,711MT, an all-time high for the region due to greater quantities seen to Indonesia (+3,444MT or +65% YoY) and Vietnam (+5,994MT or +415% YoY).
  • In contrast, total whole milk powder exports fell below the previous year due to significant losses to China (-16,682MT or -39% YoY), Indonesia (-6,943MT or -55% YoY), Bangladesh (-5,610MT or -63% YoY), and Thailand (-4,561MT or -60% YoY).
  • Anhydrous milkfat (AMF) exports fell below the prior year for the first time since June 2022. While growth to Mexico (+2,826MT or +270% YoY) allowed the country to overtake China (-2,247MT or -65% YoY) as the highest in market share with 34%, it was not enough to overcome additional declines to Egypt (-1,821MT or -87% YoY) and Vietnam (-722MT or -70% YoY).
  • Fluid milk and cream shipments returned to growth in February after falling below the prior year in January, however, exports remain below 2021 levels. China reigns as the top destination with 78% of market share as exports to the country climbed by 4,461MT (+22%) compared to the prior year. However, the impressive gain was partially offset by losses to Taiwan (-502MT or -31% YoY), Fiji (-252MT or -50% YoY) and New Caledonia (296MT or -58% YoY).
